Maintenance Throwing
MAINTENANCE THROWING DAY (Build / Maintain)
Goal: Maintain velocity + reinforce mechanics
Total Throws: 60–90
Intensity: 70–85%
1. Stand-Still Facing Partner Throws
Distance: 50–70 ft
Volume: 2–3 sets of 8–10 throws
Start with controlled stand-still throws facing your partner. Focus on clean arm action, smooth rhythm, and throwing the ball with good direction and finish. This phase is meant to get the arm loose, establish feel for the baseball, and prepare the body for more intent.
2. Forward Roll Throws
Distance: 70–90 ft
Volume: 2 sets of 6–8 throws
As the arm warms up, move into roll-in throws. Use a smooth walking or shuffle roll-in to create momentum into the throw. Stay relaxed and athletic while letting the ball come out with slightly more freedom and carry. The goal here is to transition from pure feel into more natural movement.
3. Step-Behind Throws
Distance: 90+ ft
Volume: 2–3 sets of 6 throws
From 90 feet and beyond, begin step-behind throws. Use the lower half to build momentum and allow the arm to work with more intent. Focus on staying loose, creating carry on the ball, and maintaining good direction through release. Do not force max effort—this is still maintenance work.
4. Long Toss
Distance: Build out gradually to your comfortable maintenance distance
Volume: 8–12 total throws building out and working back in
Flow directly from step-behinds into long toss. Gradually stretch the distance out based on how the arm feels that day. The focus should be easy arm speed, good trajectory, and clean movement patterns. Once you reach your max comfortable distance, work the ball back in with lower trajectory and firm, consistent intent.
5. Long Toss Into the Net
Volume: 8–12 throws
Finish by throwing into the net with intent. This should feel like a controlled transfer from long toss back into a more direct line. Let the arm move fast, stay aggressive through release, and focus on maintaining the same arm speed and rhythm you built during long toss. These throws should reinforce carry, intent, and finish without needing full mound work.
Coaching Notes
Start smooth and build gradually, allowing distance to dictate intensity while staying loose, athletic, and under control, maintaining arm speed without overthrowing, and finishing with intent into the net.
